Guidelines for Establishing a WINS Project
The Berlin Workshop in Institutional Analysis of Social-Ecological Systems (WINS) encourages scholars, in particular WINS affiliated faculty members, to initiate research projects. These may emerge within the WINS environment, be adopted by WINS or associated with WINS. In any case, such projects should
• focus on a topic which belongs to, or is closely linked to, the knowledge ar- ea of institutional analysis of socio-ecological-technical systems.
• include at least one WINS affiliated faculty. Scholars may also become an affiliated faculty member, after they have set up a project.
Projects are classified into WINS Projects (including both WINS evolved pro- jects and WINS adopted projects) and WINS associated projects. As a rule, the projects should explore opportunities to link research to academic education.
WINS Evolved Projects
WINS evolved projects are defined as being conceived within the WINS envi- ronment, i.e., coordinated among a number of WINS-affiliated scholars, facili- tated through WINS network coordination, and set up using WINS organiza- tional support and facilities (e.g., administration, webpage). Accordingly, WINS evolved projects are expected to include:
- at least two WINS-affiliated scholars, one of them being Principal Investiga- tor (PI) of the project.
- at least one WINS-hosted PhD student and one post-doc, if the nature and size of the project allow for combining research with academic education.
WINS evolved projects will:
- be given publicity on the WINS website. This will cover at the minimum:
- A description of research objectives and project members
- Information about the organization of/attendance of events
- Research results and academic achievements (e.g., completed PhDs)
- Publications and other dissemination activities (e.g., pilot projects)
- be included in the public relations activities of WINS (e.g., press releases, newsletters, and coordination with the public work of Humboldt University).
- The PI’s and PhD students and post-docs will have access to:
- WINS facilities
- WINS administrative support
- WINS courses
- The WINS seminar
WINS Adopted Projects
WINS adopted projects are defined as being conceived outside the WINS envi- ronment (for example by young researchers who obtained funding to create their own research group, in Germany called “Junior Professors”). Accordingly, such projects are expected to include:
- at least one WINS-affiliated scholar (i.e., the young scholar PI of the project will be invited to affiliate to WINS)
- at least one WINS-hosted PhD student, if the nature and size of the project allow for combining research with academic education.
WINS adopted projects enjoy the same support as WINS evolved projects.
WINS Associated Projects
WINS associated projects are defined as being conceived outside the WINS environment and including PIs who are no WINS-affiliated scholars. WINS as- sociated projects will be given publicity on the WINS website and be included in the public relations activities of WINS similar to WINS evolved and associat- ed projects. The PI’s and PhDs/Post-docs will also be invited to participate in the WINS Seminar. Other support might be available upon agreement.
Scholars or groups interested in developing a WINS Project (either a WINS evolved project or a WINS adopted project) or offering a WINS associated pro- ject should submit a preliminary proposal, including information on prospective participants and funding, to Renate Judis (renate.judis@agrar.hu-berlin.de).
